Backside Tricks
Intros to tricks that use the 'Backside of
the string.'
Going to the Backside of the string is also referred to as Release and Recapture. The result is that the diabolo 'rides' on the bottom of string instead of its normal position on 'open string' which is the top of the string. After making a backside move the strings become crossed. See examples. From the bottom or Backside of the string several amazing tricks are possible. Since the diabolo is in a reverse world, pulling of the regular stick will not add speed but slow the diabolo's spin. See (for example) tricks that use backside intros. Historically the common way of performing a Chinese Yo-yo was on the Backside of the string.

(Righthanders may want to start with the Right Backside; see notes.)
Right Backside instructions
1) Toss the diabolo off to the right a bit.
2) Reach out with the right stick and lay the string on the axle of the diabolo.
3) As the diabolo begins to fall 'draw' a half circle around the diabolo with
the right stick end. This action should catch the diabolo.
4) After catching the diabolo continue to move your right stick right so you
arms become crossed with your left over your right.
Note: If you bring your arms and sticks back to normal the string should show
a half twist above the diabolo. Also, if you pull with the right stick for
more speed the diabolo will slow.
5) To get back to normal from crossed arms, toss the diabolo, by pulling out
with the sticks.
6) While the diabolo is in the air, uncross your arms and tighten string for
the catch. After the catch. the diabolo should be open again on the string.
Notes: The Right Backside is often used as a way to Left Backside. Righties usually find the Right Backside easier than the Left. If you need to get to the Left Backside, but it is easier for you to go to the Right Backside; do a Right Backside and then a Counter Clockwise Sun. This actions puts the diabolo in the Left Backside position.

Left Backside instructions
1) Toss the diabolo off to the left a bit.
2) Reach out with the left stick and lay the string on the axle of the diabolo.
3) As the diabolo begins to fall 'draw' a half circle around the diabolo with
the left stick end. This action should catch the diabolo.
4) After catching the diabolo continue to move your left stick right so you

6) While the diabolo is in the air, uncross your arms and tighten string for
the catch. The diabolo should be open again on the string.
Notes: The Right Backside is the same trick on the right side. Righties usually find the Right Backside easier than the Left. If you need to get to the Left Backside, but it is easier for you to go to the Right Backside; do a Right Backside and then a Counter Clockwise Sun. This actions puts the diabolo in the Left Backside position.

Cradle Backside
(Going to the Left Backside of the string from a Right Trapeze Cradle)
(Similar instuctions allow for going to the Right Backside from a Left Trapeze Cradle)
source:
Herman, Sweden
1. Do a Right Trapeze Cradle, but don't throw it up yet.
2. Throw the diabolo and land it on the string that goes across from both sticks. It is sometimes called the 'cross string' and isn't part of the strings that make the 'X'.
3. Slip the cradle off the sticks. This can be done by simply pointing the sticks in at each other and then pointing downward. The diabolo will be on the string with the string crossed just above the axle. This is the Left Backside, see figure.
Note: Some tricks require that you start from the Left Backside. This move is an easy way to get ready for those tricks.
Tricks that use the Left Backside are the Cat's Cradle and the Coffee Grinder.
Note: Above is shown how to get to the Left backside from a Right Trapeze Cradle. It is also possible to get to the Right Backside by doing similar moves from a Left Trapeze Cradle.

Double Half Spaghetti
to Backside
1) Do the Half
Spaghetti Trick, but don't toss it.
2) Now do the movemnts of another Half Spaghetti without tossing.
3) Point your sticks in toward the diabolo and allow the diabolo to drop so
the string loops slip off of the left stick.
4) The diabolo should end up with the string crossing above the axle.
The diabolo is now on the Right Backside of the string, ready for any trick requiring a right backside.

1) Do an Inverse Trapeze, but don't toss it.
2) Now do the movements of another Inverse Trapeze without tossing.
3) Point your sticks in toward the diabolo and allow the diabolo to drop so the string loops slip off of the right stick.
4) The diabolo should end up with the string crossing above the axle.
The diabolo is now on the Right Backside backside of the string, ready for any trick requiring a right backside.

Double Redone Trapeze to Backside
source: Michael Gibbs & Joey, Minnesota, USA
1) Do the beginning of a Redone Trapeze on the Right side. This is where you do a Right Trapeze, but miss landing the diabolo on the string so it falls toward you and hangs between the sticks. Now swing the diabolo clockwise up between the sticks so it hits the string across as it goes over the right stick. Then the diabolo should stop after going over the Right stick and be hanging on the other side of it.
2) Repeat the last move by swinging the diabolo clockwise around the Right stick making sure it goes into the string across as it rises. It should end up hanging on the right side of the Right stick as before. This is sometimes referred to as doing two Redone Trapezes. Problems with this are that the string often slips off the end of the Right stick, so take care that your Right stick stays level and doesn't point downward.
3) Now tilt your stick slightly downward, allowing the strings to slip off and the diabolo to drop down and hang at the normal position. Note that the string is in a 'cross'. The previous moves have put you in a backside position.
The diabolo is now on the Right Backside backside of the string, ready for any trick requiring a right backside.

Overarm Sun to Left Backside

example
Snapping The Violin String |
Overarm transistion to the left backside.
The Overarm Sun Scoop and Sun puts the diabolo on the Left Backside of the string.
The Scoop Catch is the action of tossing upward with the left toss, swinging the right arm and handstick counter clockwise, and then 'scooping' up to catch the diabolo. 'Scooping' is done by rotating the right stick and arm at the right elbow to the left (CC), so the string off the right handstick is below the falling diabolo. The end of the right handstick moves from 3 o'clock to 9 o'clock for the catch and the string for the catch is horizontal.
The Scoop Sun is a Sun created when the right stick is swung clockwise and the diabolo follows it on the string. The swing needs to be forceful enough to create a nice clockwise circle to return the diabolo to the a position below the handsticks. The diabolo moves from 9 o'clock clockwise to 6 o'clock, not to fast, not to slow.
The Cross-arm Toss is a way to get out of the backside created by the Scoop Sun and other Backside movements. Holding your right handstick higher than your left; move your right stick to the left and your left stick to the right. The left stick needs to move under and closer to you as you cross your arms. This action should toss the diabolo upward. As the diabolo begins to fall, uncross your arms and bring you sticks apart to catch the falling diabolo on open string.

that use the Overarm Sun are the Overarm
Coffee Grinder, and Snapping
The Violin String.

Under-The-Leg to the Right Backside |
Under-The-Leg transistion to the left backside.
The Leg Stall and Holland's Hitch put the diabolo on the Right Backside of the string.
Both tricks toss and recapture the diabolo on the right side while while the string is under the leg. After that move the diabolo is in the Right Backside 'mode' through the remainder of the trick. The Leg Stall only escapes from the backside with a Cross-Arm (stall) Toss at the end. The Holland's Hitch trick uses the Singe Fritz Release to escape the backside in a release.
