Loop and Hook
Loop and Hook
with a Whip Catch

see Flash Movie Controls

1) Toss Diabolo up about head high, so it can be caught slightly off to the left.

2) While Diabolo is up, hand left stick's handle to right hand so sticks are both together in right hand. As sticks come together, poke left hand's 'pointer' finger between sticks. Now pull sticks to the right and left hand to the left. The string should become hooked by the 'pointer' finger and as the arms move apart the string should tighten.

3) The right hand should be holding both sticks together, horizontally pointing at the left hand. Catch the diabolo on the double string.

4) Keeping the sticks horizontal and pointing left, reach over with the loop on the left 'pointer' finger and hang the loop just over the end of both sticks. The diabolo should be hanging in a loop off the end of the sticks still spinning. Bring left hand back to your side and face left.

5) After holding the spinning diabolo out, quickly swing it up. As soon as it moves above the sticks the string should release from the end of the sticks. Now just as quickly swing sticks back down to where they were. Diabolo is up about head high waiting to be caught.

6) Quickly reach back with left hand and grab left hand stick, pull sticks apart to tighten string, and catch. A Whip Catch also works as a nice ending.

Loop And Cross
see Flash Movie Controls

source: -Richard- Flatland (Omaha) '98

1) From holding both sticks in normal position, hand right stick handle to left hand so both sticks are together.

2) As soon as sticks are together, reach with right hand to the end of the right stick. Hook all four fingers around right stick's string and pull to the right just a little.

3) Toss diabolo by pulling up with left sticks and pulling right with hooked fingers. As the diabolo rises make sure it does not strike the string above. Pointing the sticks up at the rising diabolo and continuing to pull right with the hooked fingers should give the diabolo an opening.

4) Now that the diabolo is 'away' continue to pull the strings apart so string is tight for catch. Make sure to keep sticks in left hand pointing straight out as before. Right hand's fingers are holding loop tight and this naturally opens the ends of the two sticks.

5) Catch diabolo on double string. After catch reach over with right hand a place loop end over sticks' ends, right hand moves right to left above the top of diabolo. Allow diabolo to hang spinning

6) Reach back and retrieve right stick with right hand, pulling sticks apart will reveal a kind of upside-down cross.

7) Move stick ends back together and toss diabolo up from right side of sticks. Stick ends should move up and together with rising diabolo then quickly pulled back down for a snap release. ** See also variation.

8) Pull arms apart to tighten string for catch.  A Whip Catch also works as a nice ending.

** 7 Variation) Toss diabolo up from cross, making sure the stick ends are pointed up as diabolo rises and stick ends should point at each other so sticks form a '
/\'. The instant after the diabolo begins to rise, begin to bring your stick ends back toward yourself. Although the string is untangling it is going to be in the path of the diabolo, unless you do this. This should allow string to release so diabolo can be tossed.

Andy's Loop
(Variation start of the Loop and Hook with a Whip Catch ending)
see Flash Movie Controls

source: Andy Arhelger, MN USA

1) Start with a lot of spin and then toss diabolo up about chest high and slightly off to the left.

2) Catch the diabolo in a Grind on your right stick pointed left. Hold the grind so the diabolo stays straight.

3) Carefully hand your left handstick to your right hand so it is under your right stick and not interfering with the grinding diabolo. Your right hand holds the two handles, with a finger in-between the center of the sticks, this leaves the stick ends apart, forming a sideways 'V.'

4) Place your left hand inside the 'V' and pull out to the left. Here a loop now is straight left of your sticks. Hold the loop straight left of your sticks.

5) Now the sticks can be tilted so the diabolo rolls on to the string or the diabolo can be tossed over to the string.

6) From here you are ready for the rest of the Loop and Hook.

Grind, Loop And Hook
(Another variation start of the Loop and Hook with a Whip Catch ending)
see Flash Movie Controls

source: within

1) Get the diabolo spinning fast in the normal position.

2) Hand the left stick over to the right and hold the two sticks in a horizontal 'V' with the right hand.

3) Now with the 'V' still horizontal and with the diabolo spinning below the sticks' opening; pull up with the right to toss the diabolo straight up between the two sticks, and about head high or lower. (This may be the most difficult move because the string may 'want' to hold on to the rising diabolo. The toss requires a touch.)

4) As the diabolo rises above the sticks, change the 'V' so it points left. The right stick should be on top of what was your left stick. The right stick is to catch the diabolo in a grind.

5) After the diabolo grinds for as long as you dare, place your left hand inside the 'V' sticks and pull out to the left. There is now a loop straight left of your sticks. Hold the loop straight left of your sticks.

6) Now the sticks can be tilted so the diabolo rolls on to the string or the diabolo can be tossed over to the string.

7) From here you are ready for the rest of the Loop and Hook.  A Whip Catch also works as a nice ending.

1) Get it up to a half string. (Sticks in right hand, string wrapped around the left finger, as if you were going to do the Loop and Hook throw.)

Loop and Hook preparation instructions: 1a) Toss Diabolo up about head high, so it can be caught slightly off to the left.
1b) While Diabolo is up, hand left stick's handle to right hand so sticks are both together in right hand. As sticks come together, poke left hand's 'pointer' finger between sticks. Now pull sticks to the right and left hand to the left. The string should become hooked by the 'pointer' finger and as the arms move apart the string should tighten.
1c) The right hand should be holding both sticks together, horizontally pointing at the left hand. Catch the diabolo on the double string.

2) Bring the left hand with the loop upward over the diabolo.

3) Holding the sticks in a 'V' and pointing them up, bring the stick ends up above the diabolo so they are above it, left stick on the left of the diabolo and right stick on the right.

3) Pull down with the right hand and sticks so that they go down on either side of the diabolo.

4) The diabolo should rise and climb the string.

5) Just take them back up to stop it, then continue with the Loop and Hook trick.

Note: If you have enough spin you may be able to make the diabolo climb more than once.

1) Go to the Loop And Hook, where the right hand holds both sticks and the left holds the string straight off to the left side. The diabolo has been caught on both horizontal strings and sits there.

2) Now slightly toss up the diabolo (to the right) so it comes down near the stick ends.

3) Catch the diabolo on the 'front' string (the string nearest the audience.) Remember to catch it near the stick end. (The positions of your hands while doing the Loop and Hook may vary, but no worries, just catch the diabolo on only one string. The trick should work either way.)

4) After the diabolo is caught allow it to move leftward on the string toward your left hand.

5) As soon as the diabolo gets near your left hand toss it up a bit.

6) Just after the toss, tighten the strings so both stings are together and catch the diabolo on both strings in a little bounce near the left hand.

7) Make sure the diabolo bounces rightward so it goes over near the stick ends where it is to be caught again on the right 'front' string.

8) Repeat this move as many times as you wish. The diabolo is tossed over to the right and is caught - then comes back to the left, where it is tossed up and then bounces off both strings to go back to the right again.

9) To get out, you can simply hand the left handstick back to the left hand as the diabolo is on the right string. This will result in the diabolo on 'open' string and the hand sticks in the normal position.

9-Variation) On one of the bounces, have the diabolo bounce a bit higher and catch the diabolo in a Whip Catch.

Loop And Half Cross
(This is a variation of the Loop And Cross)

source: Ronan Casey

1) Fast spin, throw diabolo straight up, and hand the left stick to your right hand. (Slide your left hand along the sticks as you left go so you have hooked the string in your left fingers.

2) Now with the diabolo in the air, pull the string tight between the sticks in your right hand and the loop of string in your left. Catch the diabolo on the double string. When in this position, try to keep the string straight, i.e.. don't have it twisted around itself. The left and right hands should be the same height above the ground and the sticks should be in the "V" position. Make sure the stick '"V" points straight ahead and notice that the left stick is just above the string to the right stick.

3) Rotate your right wrist so the left stick goes down, hooks under the right stick's string, and returns with that string on top of it.

4) Hang the string in your left hand over the tip of the left stick.

5) Take the left stick back to the left hand and hold both sticks normally.

6) Lower your right hand a few inches and then move the right stick under the left stick and make a Counterclockwise wrap around the diabolo. Your right stick should end up back where it was. The diabolo should hang between your sticks.

7) Gently toss diabolo up and then pull down with sticks for a snap release.

8) Catch diabolo on open string.

Trapeze Release Looper

source: Tom of Northampton Juggling Club

1) Follow the first instructions of the Loop and Cross or Loop and Hook tricks so you can get the diabolo on double string, both sticks in the right hand , and the left finger(s) are holding the a loop of string. See 1a through 1e below for further help.

1a) From holding both sticks in normal position, hand right stick handle to left hand so both sticks are together.

1b) As soon as sticks are together, reach with right hand to the end of the right stick. Hook all four fingers around right stick's string and pull to the right just a little.

1c) Toss diabolo by pulling up with left sticks and pulling right with hooked fingers. As the diabolo rises make sure it does not strike the string above. Pointing the sticks up at the rising diabolo and continuing to pull right with the hooked fingers should give the diabolo an opening.

1d) Now that the diabolo is 'away' continue to pull the strings apart so string is tight for catch. Make sure to keep sticks in left hand pointing straight out as before. Right hand's fingers are holding loop tight and this naturally opens the ends of the two sticks.

1e) Catch diabolo on double string.

2) Do a Right Trapeze using the sticks in the right hand. This is a tight move account the double string is much shorter.

3) Toss the diabolo upward releasing the strings with your left finger(s).

4) The strings should quickly unwrap off the diabolo's axle as it rises until the diabolo is free. While the diabolo is in the air, hand the left stick back to the left hand.

5) Catch diabolo.

Double Sun Release Looper

source: Tom of Northampton Juggling Club

1) Follow the first instructions of the Loop And Hook or the righthand Loop And Cross so you can get the diabolo on double string, both sticks in the right hand , and the left finger(s) are holding the a loop of string. See 1a through 1e below for further help.
1a) From holding both sticks in normal position, hand left stick handle to right hand so both sticks are together.
1b) As soon as sticks are together, reach with left hand to the end of the left stick. Hook all four fingers around left stick's string and pull to the left just a little.
1c) Toss diabolo by pulling up with both sticks and pulling left with hooked fingers. As the diabolo rises make sure it does not strike the string above. Pointing the sticks up at the rising diabolo and continuing to pull left with the hooked fingers should give the diabolo an opening.
1d) Now that the diabolo is 'away' continue to pull the strings apart so string is tight for catch. Make sure to keep sticks in right hand pointing straight out as before. Left hand's fingers are holding the loop tight and this naturally opens the ends of the two sticks.

1e) Catch diabolo on double string.

2) Do two Clockwise or Counterclockwise Suns by swinging the diabolo around both the stick ends and the left hand holding the loop. This is a tight move account the double string is much shorter. NOTE: If this seems difficult, try just one Sun instead of two.

3) As the last Sun is finishing allow the diabolo to continue upward into a toss. As the diabolo rises, release the strings with your left finger(s).

4) The strings should quickly unwrap off the diabolo's axle as it rises until the diabolo is free. While the diabolo is in the air, hand the left stick back to the left hand.

5) Catch diabolo.

VARIATION: Combine a Sun with a Trapeze and then release the diabolo.

Cross And Unhook
(Inverse of the Loop And Cross)
see Flash Movie Controls

1) From normal do a Half Spaghetti, wrapping around the left stick with the right.

2) As you are finishing up with Half Spaghetti, catch the closest loop off the left stick with the right stick's end and pull the right stick back again to the right. This should create a 'Cross' above the diabolo's axle.

3) Then hand your right stick to you left and hold both in a level 'V.'

4) You should still have the 'cross'. Reach over with the right hand and grab the top connecting string with your finger(s).

5) Pull your hands apart so the double string tosses the diabolo and becomes horizontal and tight.

6) While the diabolo is in the air, hand the right stick back to your Right hand and catch on open string.

OR 6) Catch the diabolo on double strings and do the Loop And Cross which looks like a reverse of the Cross and Unhook.

Double Loop and Hook

source: Benjamin Alten
benalten.googlepages.com
1) Follow the first instructions of the Loop and Hook trick so you can get the diabolo on half strings, but don't toss it yet.

2) Note that there are four strings going down to the axle, a pair on one side and a pair of strings on the other. With your left hand reach above the axle, separate, and pull out the leftmost pair. Pull that pair of strings leftward. This is to create a loop of (double) string to toss the diabolo out of.

3) Open the 'circle' of string as much as possible, but take care to not pull the string off the sticks. The diabolo should be on two strings with two strings above it. You'll need to move the top strings away from you so the diabolo can be tossed straight upward. You will have to point the sticks upward so the strings don't slip off.

4) Holding the string in your left and the sticks in your right, toss the diabolo up off the bottom strings. It is advisable not to toss the diabolo too high for you will be catching it on short strings.

5) While the diabolo is in the air, continue holding the strings in the left and holding the sticks pointing upward with the right. Catch the diabolo on the strings as you did at the beginning of the trick, only now there are four strings between your left hand and the sticks.

6) After the catch, turn the sticks horizontal (level with the floor) and loop the strings in your left hand over the end of the sticks so the diabolo hangs below them.

7) Now you can toss the diabolo out and upward as you would normally toss from the Loop and Hook trick. As with the regular trick the string loops will release and the diabolo will be free.

8) Catch the diabolo regular by handing the the left stick back to the left hand or do a Whip Catch, keeping both sticks in the right hand.

Variation beginning Step 2: Holding the sticks in your right so the two sticks are a bit apart side-by-side in a narrow 'V'. Locate the cross string that was the top of the loop you earlier put on the sticks. With you left hand, reach from below right of the diabolo, and through the sticks to grab that cross string.

Variation Step 3) Keeping your right hand and sticks still, pull the cross string downward right of the diabolo. As you pull the string the diabolo will rise somewhat. You are about to go around the diabolo and back up to the sticks.

Variation Step 4) Continue pulling the string under the diabolo and now move leftward and then up so you can hook the loop of string onto the sticks. As you do this hold the loop of string so it does not touch the diabolo's cups, but just the axle.

Variation Conclusion)This variation gives you another way to double strings. Continue with step 7 for the release toss.

Dropshot

source: Jeremy Rolph, UK

1) Follow the first instructions of the Loop and Cross trick so you can get the diabolo on half strings, but don't hook the string over both sticks. Instead hook the string only over the left stick which is pointed forward.

2) With your right hand which is now free, grab the stick that was originally in your right hand with no string looped over it.

3) Pull the right stick down and left of the diabolo.

4) Continue moving the right stick, now under the diabolo so the string is under the axle.

5) Continue moving the right stick from under the diabolo to the right side of the diabolo to normal position.

4) You will then find that if you point the end of the left stick with the string looped on it downwards the diabolo will be on the single string again.

Loop Grind

source: Michael, Austria

1) Follow the first instructions of the Loop and Hook trick so you can get the diabolo on half strings with a loop over both sticks.

2) Toss the diabolo low up off the the strings by swinging upward with your right hand and sticks.

3) Catch the diabolo by grinding on the two sticks.

4) Throw it up out off the grind.

5) Catch and Smile!

Fly Fishing

source: Lee Humes -Port Macquarie, Australia

1) Hand your left stick over to your right hand so you you are holding both sticks in the right hand. Both sticks should be pointing left. Hold the sticks in a slight 'V' with your left stick closer to you.

2) Take the left string coming off the left stick with the left hand and pull it out a bit to the left. (This is to open the area above the diabolo.)

3) By lifting upward with the left hand and the right hand and handsticks, toss the diabolo up slightly and to the left.

4) While the diabolo is in the air, release the left string and reach up and rightward with the two sticks in the right hand. (As in a back swing of a Whip Catch.)

5) As the diabolo falls on the left side, swing down onto the diabolo's axle with the strings of both sticks in the right hand. (Point the stick that used to be your left stick at the axle as you swing. Your right stick is more out toward the audience. This helps in catching the diabolo on Open string, rather than crossed strings.)

6) Catch the diabolo in a Whip Catch.

7) Hand the left stick back to the left hand and you should be back to normal.

Looped Trapeze Whip

source: spearedbyedge654

2) Now with both sticks in the right hand point them forward and do a Right Trapeze around the diabolo. (Note: This is a little different because you have double strings and your left hand is holding on one side. Just so the same movements as a Right Trapeze.)

3) Toss the diabolo from where it sits as if it had no strings around it. At the same time let go with your left hand. Be sure to point your sticks at the diabolo as it rises to allow the string loops to release. (Note: You may find it easier to toss the diabolo if you move the diabolo, your sticks and your left hand down a little before you toss it.)

4) The diabolo should release from the string loops and fly free into a toss. Do a Righthand Whip Catch for an ending.
